File-Sharing Relationships – conflicts of interest in online gift-giving

چکیده
This paper suggests a relationship model for describing, analyzing and foreseeing conflicts of interest in file-sharing networks. The model includes levels of relationship ranging from the individual (ego), to the small group of close peers (micro), to a larger network of acquaintances (meso) to the anonymous larger network (macro). It is argued that an important focal point for analysis of cooperation and conflict is situated in the relations between these levels. Three examples of conflicts from a studied file-sharing network are presented. Finally, the relationship model is discussed in terms of applicability to other domains, recreational as well as professional. Introduction and Background File-sharing applications, services, communities and networks have become increasingly popular during the past few years. Using digital media, computer networking, and computer-mediated communication to transfer digital goods is now an important part of many peoples’ lives. File-sharing is a contended practice and powerful actors (e.g. record companies etc.) are doing their best to suppress it. General attention has been directed towards the dubious nature of sharing services and user behavior (free-riding, copyright infringement et c). Our position here is however that there is little doubt that many users find the act of sharing fulfilling in itself. While certain ideologically motivated activities that are part of the current file-sharing culture (Giesler & Pohlmann, 2002) – such as “making stuff generally available” – violates current laws and various rights of ownership and redistribution it’s hardly the main motivation for most users. This suggests an

Public and Non - Public Gifting on the Internet
This thesis contributes to the knowledge of how computer-mediated communication and information sharing works in large groups and networks. In more detail, the research question put forward is: in large sharing networks, what concerns do end-users have regarding to whom to provide material? A theoretical framework of gift-giving was applied to identify, label and classify qualitative end-user c...
متن کاملSocial Influence and Reciprocity in Online Gift Giving
Giving gifts is a fundamental part of human relationships that is being affected by technology. The Internet enables people to give at the last minute and over long distances, and to observe friends giving and receiving gifts. How online gift giving spreads in social networks is therefore important to understand. We examine 1.5 million gift exchanges on Facebook and show that receiving a gift c...
متن کاملThe power of gifts: organizing social relationships in open source communities
In writings on the open source software development model, it is often argued that it is successful as a result of the gift economy that embraces activities in online communities. However, the theoretical foundations for this argument are seldom discussed and empirically tested. Starting with the ‘classic’ theories of gift giving, we discuss how they need to be developed in order to explain gif...
متن کاملSimplifying the Task of Group Gift Giving
Gift Giving is a complex and ubiquitous task that would benefit from the simpler and more user-centred style of interaction offered by the Personal Web vision. In this paper we begin by reviewing relevant literature on gift giving, and we identify key roles and requirements of gift giving. We examine current approaches to the support of group gift giving online and review some of their deficien...
متن کاملPrimary-Backup Access Control Scheme for Securing P2P File-Sharing Systems
Peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing systems have gained large interests among the internet users. However, wide-scale applications of P2P file-sharing technologies are constrained by the limitations associated with the sophisticated control mechanisms. Moreover, the decentralized and anonymous characteristics of P2P environments make it more difficult to control accesses on the shared resources, es...
